Drawing with templates

Lay a pose, a grid or a shape into your canvas as a drawing aid - it's never part of your picture.

A figure in motion, a face in profile, a perspective with a vanishing point - some things come easier with a template. In the new drawing program you lay a picture from our template library into the canvas and draw over it or next to it.

Only you see the template. It's not part of your drawing, not in the video and not in the result the others see at the end.

Choosing a template

At the bottom of the layer list is the Template button. It opens the library with its categories - poses, grids and more. Click a picture, and it lies in your canvas.

In the template's row you can then:

  • click the thumbnail to choose another template,
  • place it (see below),
  • show or hide it with the eye,
  • remove it with the bin.

Placing

Click Place. A frame with handles appears around the template, right in the canvas:

  • Dragging moves it to where you need it.
  • A handle at a corner or an edge resizes it - without distorting it.
  • The handle above the frame rotates it.

Next to the canvas you set:

  • Opacity - faint enough not to distract you.
  • Mirror.
  • In front of or behind the drawing - in front to trace precisely, behind so your strokes are easy to see.
  • Fit into the canvas brings it back to canvas size.

With Done placing you carry on drawing. The template can only be moved while placing - so it won't slip away while you draw.

In the Template game mode

There the host has chosen the picture, and it is already in your canvas. You can place, show and hide it as usual - but not swap it for another or remove it: everyone draws the same picture.

Good to know

  • The template isn't part of the drawing: undo, the color picker and the bucket ignore it.
  • Your browser remembers the template for each drawing. Open it again later on the same device and the template is still there - on another device it isn't.
  • A template is a help, not a colouring page: in a game it's your idea that counts, not how precisely you traced.
